In the Beginning
“Building Better Communities”
Richmond, Virginia
The
first Virginia Statewide Neighborhood Conference was held in Richmond,
Virginia at the Midtown Inn on Saturday, October 7, 2000. The conference
began with the Welcome and Opening remarks presented by Mr. Calvin Jamison,
Richmond’s City Manager, Ms. Selena Cuffee-Glenn, Deputy Director
of Richmond’s Department of Community Development, Ms. Estelle
McCadden, Statewide Conference Chairperson of Roanoke, Virginia, and
Mr. Thomas James, Community Representative of Richmond’s North
Neighborhood Team.
To support the conference’s theme, “Building
Better Communities”, the following workshops were held: The Work
of Leadership in Neighborhood Organizations, Health & Public Safety
issues, Strategic Planning and Neighborhood Preservation, Code Enforcement
in Your Community, Marketing Your Neighborhood, Environmental Justice
& Transportation, and Youth Track.
Over 225 participants were in attendance who asked that
a conference be held the following year.
